Why Us?

With over 250 Freemasons Lodges across Hampshire in over 40 locations there are a lot of Lodges to choose from.  After a lot of adjustment, development and progress in the fraternity we are pleased that like a number of Hampshire Lodges, King Ælfred Lodge has been in a period of steady and sustained growth and now has record numbers of members (see graph).

King Ælfred Lodge was established in 1956 and was consecrated as an 'Informal Lodge' this meant that we were slightly less rigid in our ceremonies and we did not opt for Dinner Suits for our meetings, preferring instead Lounge Suits. We meet 7 times a year on the first Monday of the month (Bank Holidays excepted - for the second Monday) from October through to April.

At King Ælfred we have an aim to be one of the most forward thinking in Hampshire and are pioneering lots of initiatives to ensure that we are as accessible and fun as possible, to this end we have created a mission statement:

"King Ælfred will be the most forward thinking and innovative Lodge in Hampshire.  We will pioneer new ideas, refine best practice and look to ensure the very best experience for every member of our Lodge and every visitor that attends.  We will try new ideas not just once but a couple of times to enable a refining process to take place and a proper evaluation to be completed and no ideas will be discounted.  This will be conducted in an open minded and friendly manner conducive to the fraternity of which we are all members."

To achieve this we have created stronger social events, introduced riotous dinners and special occasions on the meetings that we meet (Burns Night, Curry Night and Quiz Night to name a few).  We like a number of Lodges in Hampshire have been bucking this trend and have been steadily increasing our membership for the past 10 years.

We've also adjusted the start time of our meetings to ensure that the working man has a chance to get to us.  This has move from 17:30 to 18:00 with an opportunity for last admittance as late as 18:30 which ensures that all can attend regardless of most working commitments.

You can also find out more about other Lodges in Winchester here and some of our neighbours William of Wykeham and Evingar.
